November 2020

What a great race we had at Hellsend! I am thrilled that Niko Verlasco (1:40:569) made his first elite win but I apologise to Matt Bentley (1:39.852) for changing the rules half way. It was out of my control. I am assured by the riders that we all had fun (and that is what really counts) and we know that Matt is to be feared in Paarl. The final scoring for the 2020 WC DH season will be with both race runs counting as originally planned. Those (CSA members only) who will be awarded WC DH colours for the 2020 season will be announced shortly. Unfortunately they will not be handed out this year due to Covid restrictions but on Saturday 16 January 2021 after the Paarl practice (hopefully). Just a reminder that the SA DHI Series scores differently (according to UCI rules) where the seeding run counts for 25% and race run scores full points.

We are changing our online registration system (entry ninja/computicket) to better suit WC DH needs. All the new links to races will be advertised on out Facebook and Instagram pages with a link from the WP webpage too, which is currently being edited.  All FOUR races will be open soon. Save some cash for the Paarl race in mid-January.

What we do want to make clear for the 2021 season is that WC DH is about Downhill. Subsequently, we recommend that all serious contenders enter into the correct DH categories from the start of the series. You cannot change categories. The new 2021 ruling insists that all DH riders have to have CSA membership licences. This is in your own interest as it insures you at the races.

CSA Membership: Cycling South Africa takes great pleasure in announcing that our Membership fees for 2020 will remain at R250 per annum.

https://www.cyclingsa.com/membership

Full Racing License: This category of license is for riders from the age of 17-years-Those of you who race in the UCI categories (Junior, U23 and Elite) earn UCI points, which will assist them in being seeded at future UCI category events, UCI World Cups and UCI World Championships. The cost of a full racing license is R450 per year

For the series riders: WC DH Colours may only be awarded to CSA licensed riders and according to the following criteria:

Good sportsmanship and good conduct on and off the field of sport WILL be a pre-requisite for any awarding of colours. A valid annual racing licence for UCI categories (Juniors and Elites ) and CSA Membership for non UCI Categories. Riders must be racing with above mentioned licences for the entire racing season. Recipient must be affiliated to WC province on the above mentioned licences. The rider must also be a resident of South Africa or hold the required residency permit to be considered for WC Colours.

We do however love to have other cycling enthusiasts at our races esp. Enduro and XCO riders (often on hard-tales) join us. We have created three (extra) Enduro (bike) events and one, fun category ‘Sportsmen’s’ class (men & women) for the 2021 season:

·      Enduro – Sub Jun (8-14 years) No downhill bikes will be allowed in these categories

·      Enduro – Junior (15-18 years) No downhill bikes will be allowed in these categories

·      Enduro – Senior (18+ / adult) No downhill bikes will be allowed in these categories

·      Sportsmen’s’ class (men & women) Pure fun on a bike

You will be able to purchase a day licence for R50.00 from the website/online entries. Although we discourage late entries, they will be available (esp. for shuttle day) at registration on the Saturday from 08:30 – 10:00.

The WC DH committee are all volunteer parents who make DH happen. They have children who are racing.  Please offer your services, whether it’s taking a few turn at transporting riders to the top or selling cool drinks. We are all in this together.

I am already looking forward to a POV planned with John Parr and Andrew Neetling. Entries will open before Christmas. Keep a beady eye on Facebook and Instagram for up-to-minute event details.
